Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park while participating in a 19 CEM credit Veterinary Medicine course in Feline Internal Medicine and Surgery with Dr. Michael Lappin.
After your arrival, we embark to Arusha where we overnight at Moivaro Lodge. The next day we spend relaxing, hiking through the 40 acres of coffee plantations near our lodge and exploring the local countryside. The next day, we drive to Londorossi where our porters pack up our gear. We then enter the gates of Kilimanjaro National Park and begin our hike through the lush rainforest.
Our fourth day, we start with a steep hike out of camp through a new type of vegetation and volcanic rock. After camping en route at Shira Camp, we ascend the following day with Kilimanjaro majestically towering in front of us. Day six, we wake up to hot tea and breakfast and immediately make our assault on the steep Barranco Wall, fondly called “the Breakfast Climb”. After climbing out of the Karanga Valley, the trail ascends a ridge to the Barafu Hut, our highest camp yet, at 15500 feet.
Our day to summit has arrived! We rise at 11:30 pm and begin climbing by starlight, the porters always reminding us to go “polee-polee” (slowly, slowly!), until we reach Uhuru Peak. (Freedom Peak) at 19.340 feet, the highest point on the continent of Africa. After breathing in the summit air and having a celebratory hug, we hike down the Mweka trail through the rainforest and arrive in the village of Mweka where we shop for wood curios, batiks. T-shirts, and souvenirs followed by a relaxing evening at Moivaro Lodge.
The next day. we leave for Tarangire National Park, a park with its panoramic views across the volcano-studded floor at the base of the Great Rift Valley and famous for its high concentration of elephant herds and tree climbing pythons. The next day we continue to explore the Park, again overnighting at Kikoti camp.
Our last full day, we depart Lake Manyara Serena and drive to Ngorongoro Crater for a tour. After breakfast the next morning, we slowly drive back to Arusha, via the Karate Hospital for a short visit to see the different experience of Tanzanian medical professionals before we depart for home.
