MACHU PICCHU - INCA TRAIL - APURIMAC RIVER COMBO ADVENTURE - 11 Days

Join us on one of our classic and favorite trips - rafting and trekking in Peru. Hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and rafting the Apurimac River is an unbeatable combination of pure adventure and adrenaline fun! The stunning simplicity and grandeur of Machu Picchu, a fitting reward after hiking the Inca Trail, combined with the Apurimac River’s deep granite gorge, inviting white sand beaches, and world class white water make this Peru adventure trip one of the best in the world! We are committed to exceeding all of your expectations! There are many companies that offer the Inca Trail or Apurimac River - what sets Bio Bio Expeditions apart? Our attention to detail, the safety qualifications and resumes of our river team, the gourmet touches, our relationships with our Peruvian partners and guides, and the passion for Peru combine to give you the adventure-of-a-lifetime.
Our Peru adventure to Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail begins in the historic seat of the Inca civilization, Cusco, where we acclimatize to the elevation (11.000 feet), explore the ancient city and take an excursion up to the fascinating ruins of Sacsayhuaman. We will enjoy a welcome dinner at a delicious restaurant and have a good night's rest after the long journey to Peru.

Our rafting adventure begins following our time in Cusco. It is worth noting that our river journey is coordinated through our Peruvian partners who were some of the first river runners in Peru. Our head guide and partner, Piero Vellutino, is an internationally known name in the world of swiftwater rescue. He, and all the guides who work with him, are swiftwater rescue technicians and instructors. Piero is flown all over the world to teach swiftwater rescue to military, firefighters, and other guides. Safety is our number one priority! We start this journey by driving to the put-in of the Apurimac River, an upper tributary of the Amazon. During the next three days we will run numerous Class IV rapids and one Class V in a magnificent gorge. We camp each night on the white sand beaches next to the river, enjoying delicious meals cooked over an open fire.

After our takeout on day five, we return to Cusco and on our sixth day begin our trek on the Inca Trail. Our trek will provide you with the experience of a lifetime! With plenty of guides joining us you can walk at your own pace. We will trek approximately 8 miles per day, up and over two high mountain passes. We will be on the trail for 4 days, 3 nights and are certain that you have never trekked under such comfortable and luxurious conditions! We are committed to impeccable service and quality and you will be impressed with our attention to detail and gourmet touches. From the warm water basins delivered to your tent for washing up in the morning, to the Mountain Hardwear 4 season dining dome for meals, all aspects of the trip are first class! We visit many archeological sights along the way and admire the incredible views of the snow capped Andes. As we get closer to Machu Picchu the scenery becomes lusher as we traverse through the cloud forest. The trail becomes even more magical as it carves through tunnels, up steep stairways, and hugs the lush mountainside. Finally we ascend up steep stone steps and arrive at the Sun Gate for our first magnificent view of the Machu Picchu citadel spread out before us. We will make our first initial exploration of the lost city of the Incas then transfer a short ride to our hotel in Aguas Calientes, a charming town nestled into the mountainside over the Urubamba river gorge. Our last day, we will wake early to have more time for a guided exploration of enchanting Machu Picchu. You will have plenty of time to also explore the ruins on your own before we take an afternoon scenic train ride back to Cusco and a festive farewell dinner.

Salcantay Trip Extension
For those who want a longer trek we offer an extended itinerary for our Inca Trail - Apurimac Combo Adventure which includes an additional three days of trekking around the breathtaking 20,574 ft. Mt. Salcantay, before connecting to the Inca Trail. Capped with a spectacular glacier and towering over the Andes, Salcantay is the highest peak in the region. This mountain was revered by the Incas as a sacred peak and it’s easy to see why. For more information and a detailed itinerary call us at 1-800-246-7238.
Machu Picchu is a perfectly preserved Inca city that was lost in the dense jungle for hundreds of years. Machu Picchu or “ancient peak” is perhaps the most famous and awe-inspiring of all the ruins discovered in the 20th century. Discovered less than a century ago, Machu Picchu allows us to step back in time and experience the wonder of living in a stone hewn ancient Inca city.
The whole of Peru was once criss-crossed with Inca and pre-Inca highways paved with thick interlocking blocks of stone. Sometimes these highways followed the valleys, but just as often they traversed the high mountain sides, tracing impossible pathways and forming narrow ledges over the bottomless gorges of the Andes. The trails were built for men on foot and lightly burdened llamas. Frequently, their gradients gave way to steps, tunnels and long zig-zag trajectories down steep faces.
The Inca Trail was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1915. The part of the trail that we trek along was formerly the royal highway to Machu Picchu. Few relatively short hikes in the world can offer such variety of scenery, staggering views, and such a mix of jungle and high sierra. Certainly no other walk known to us will lead you along an ancient highway from one secluded ruin to another, each in a breathtaking setting, each almost perfectly preserved, offering shelter, solitude, and views that no pen or camera can ever adequately record.
