Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

“JAMBO, Marc October 15th - 2006
First day back from our Tanzanian trip … what an unbelievable experience. Those glaciers at the summit of Kilimanjaro were positively spectacular.
The climb and safari were everything you promised … and more.
Jorge was just the best host ever.
We couldn’t have been happier with Bio Bio.
We’ll be contacting you later today to book next year’s trip to Peru.
Thanks for everything.”

After you reach the summit. visit Ngorongoro Crater to see the wildlife of Tanzania on an African safari and then take a relaxing sojourn to Zanzibar and the most beautiful beaches in the world!

Jambo! Karibu! ("Hello! Welcome!" in Swahili). Join us as we ascend Mount Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho route, a route specially chosen by Bio Bio Expeditions that combines the best elements of the Shira and Machame routes. We consider this the best route up the mountain! We allow seven days for our climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro to ensure everyone can acclimatize to the altitude. Everyone will reach a summit - whether it be the Uhuru Peak, one’s own personal highest point, or just the satisfaction of spending seven days on one of the most spectacular mountains of the world.

Safety is always our number one concern on all of our trips. Bio Bio has worked closely with the top high altitude medicine doctors, including Howard Donner MD and Gene Allred MD, to establish the safest possible trip. Bio Bio Expeditions has been chosen by the prestigious Society of Wilderness Medicine to run all of their wilderness medicine trips on Kilimanjaro. Each year Bio Bio guides 40 to 50 doctors up the mountain and maintains a perfect safety record. We are one of the few outfitters to carry a Gamow bag and carry Oxygen on the mountain. Bio Bio Expeditions is also one of the only companies to be a member of the Intensive Care Air Ambulance service. You are covered by our membership to air evacuation off the mountain.

Bio Bio Expeditions is also dedicated to helping the mountain porters and over the years have donated thousands of pounds of clothing to be sure all porters are properly equipped on the mountain. Please ask about other ways Bio Bio is giving back to the local communities.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro : Trip Itinerary

After arrival in Arusha, we drive to Arusha National Park at the base of Mt Meru, with spectacular views of mighty Mount Kilimanjaro. We then embark on an extraordinary game drive, where we may see elephant, hippo, flamingos, cape buffalo, zebra, giraffe, impala, sable, waterbuck, bushbuck, warthog, blue monkeys, baboons, colobus monkeys, the elusive leopard and the rare black rhinoceros.

Day three, we drive to Lemosho Village and start our trip with a gradual ascent through lush and diverse rainforest and emerge to see expansive views of the moorland on the Shira Plateau. After a night at the Forest camp, we begin a steep hike out of camp through a new type of vegetation and volcanic rock and continue over volcanic cliffs to Shira Hut Camp offering us views of Kili, Mt. Meru, and the Cathedral spires.

Day five, we ascend out of Shira Camp at a nice slow pace ultimately detouring up a steep scree slope to the impressive Lava Tower. On the steep hillside we can see the Western Breach trail which goes directly to the Kibo Glacier. After hiking across a sparse lava field, we descend to the beautiful Barranco Hut camp. Day six, we make our assault on the steep Barranco Wall, fondly called “the Breakfast Climb.” as it is our first hiking of the day, continuing on through scree and over a ridge to the Karanga River Valley Camp beneath the icefalls of the Heim. Kersten and Decken Glaciers.

The following day, the trail ascends a ridge to the Barafu Hut, our highest camp yet, at 4600 meters, located well above tree line. We arrive early to obtain plenty of rest before our 11:30 pm wake-up call for our trip to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. We begin climbing by starlight, the porters always reminding us to go “polee-polee” (“slowly-slowly”). We ascend to the rim of the Kibo Crater between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers and then onward to Uhuru Peak. (Freedom Peak) at 19,342 feet, the highest point on the continent of Africa. After watching the sunrise and snapping plenty of photos, we descend back down to Barafu Hut and continue down the Mweka trail to camp at Mweka Hut.
The next day, we trek down to the village of Mweka where we shop for wood curios, batiks, T-shirts, and souvenirs. Last stop before our transfer back to Arusha!
